About the Project

During July of 2022, I was asked to join a research project to study centennials (people over 100 years old) in Dominica, which is a country in the Caribbean. The research consisted of filming 9 separate interviews, including centennials, their children or caretakers, and other natives of Dominica. We were studying the lifestyles of the centennials, the food they ate, their activity in their younger years, and how each centennial was living their lives now. We also focused on what made Dominica unique and got to experience Dominica for ourselves.

What I Did

My job for this research project was to serve as a videographer for all of the interviews we conducted as well as gather an abundance of b-roll and photos.  Along with three professors and two other students, we traveled to the island and stayed there for 10 days to capture all of our interviews. Once we were settled in this foreign country, we traveled around the island to interview the different subjects of our study. At each location, we had to adapt to the very diverse climate (such as filming in a rainforest, hiking up mountains, exploring a beach, and trekking to waterfalls) and account for environmental factors such as rain, uneven terrain, and unideal filming locations when filming. We also made sure to adhere to all guidelines and restrictions set in place to minimize the risk of COVID-19.   After we returned from the trip, I am now in the process of editing all of the interviews and b-roll to create high-quality videos that will be combined to create one feature length documentary. When we were in the field, I used Canon DSLR camera equipment, a DJI gimbal, RODE microphone equipment (including boom mics and lav mics), and lighting equipment to gather all of the necessary footage. When we returned and began editing the footage, I used Adobe Premiere Pro to edit all of the footage together, insert supplemental b-roll, color correct any video, and add necessary transitions and effects. I also worked to trim each interview to an acceptable length and create a complete, finalized video.

After the Project

As we are finishing up editing the project, we are going to travel to Las Vegas to attend the BEA conference in April. While there, we will take part in a panel discussing our project and the efforts that went into filming and production in the field. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to take part in this project and travel out of the country to do what I enjoy most. I am also thankful that I got a ton of experience working on a production in the field and see what that was like.
